The "Bird feeder action 2010" - let's start ringing!

Next weekend we are starting with the "Bird feeder action 2010" in Poland. It's kind of play among Polish ringers, who catch birds using mistnets by their bird feeders. Rules are quite easy: You can situated your feeder wherever you want (forest, garden etc.) and feed whatever you want (sunflower, corn, pork fat etc.). The most important is the score - numbers of ringed birds and recaps. By the way we weigh and measure birds, so after few years hope to write nice publication.

My first recovery from the UK

I have just heard from Kane Brides, who observed today my BHG (Larus ridibundus) near Manchester. It's really great news, becouse it's my first record from the UK! The bird was ringed in Swinoujście harbour on the 2nd of May 2010 as an adult. Thanks to Kane for good news and photo.

Latvian Black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus) on Miedwie Lake

We have autumn at last and the roosting on Miedwie Lake is full of gulls again. On the 25th of September Lukasz observed there Latvian Black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus) with yellow ring the K148. As you can see at CR-BIRDING it's a new project which have started in 2010 and have coordinated by Dmitrijs Boiko.

There was also 1cy Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus), unlucky without any rings and the Black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus) from polish colour-ring project.

The Goosander (Mergus merganser) traped in Mrzezyno

Recently Lukasz spent a weekend in Mrzezyno with his family. By the way he colour-ringed some Herring gulls (Larus argentatus) and Black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus), but the most interesting bird was the Goosander. The moulted male rested at the harbor, where Lukasz caught him using fishing line.
We have more than 300 ringers in Poland but last year no one caught any Goosanders (see the polish annual ringing raports).

The Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis) with Swedish metal ring

It was one of the worst day in my ring reading activity. Today i observed a family of Sandwich Terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis) [2 ad. and 2 juv.] on the Baltic coast between Miedzywodzie and Dzwinow. Unlucky i have got just digi camera, no spotting scope and no binoculars :( . Have been just 5-6 meters from the bird, have made 5 pictures before the tern flew out...it was not enough to read whole number. I know that the ring had "Stockholm" on it and the first two sign 71..... (not sure for 100%).

Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) chick's found in the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) nest

Next unusual bird ringed on July in the West Pomerania. For Lukasz is the first Common Cuckoo chick in the ringing career. The nest was built in the wreck of digger, located near a moor - very easy to found out. Foster parents - White wagtails have been at nest every 5-10 min to feed this "big child".

The Dutch Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus in Swinoujscie

Recently the Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) was observed at Swinoujscie seawall. It's the most femouse seawall among polish birdwatchers at coast. There were observed birds like: Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea), Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima), Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) and lot's of rare birds (for Poland of course :) ) [see the Clanga webiste for details].
